Day One

Defining the Anatomy of the Neck and Ultrasound Pathology


  1. Learn the anatomy of the neck and identify the important landmarks.
  2. Understand the facial planes of neck and the identification of landmarks used for defining surgical levels.
  3. To review the various ultrasound patterns seen in autoimmune thyroiditis
  4. Recognize the ultrasound appearance of common pathologic thyroid abnormalities

The Principles of Ultrasound and Application of Doppler Interrogation for the Practicing Endocrinologist.


  1. Understand the properties of sound and its relevance to neck imaging.
  2. To provide a brief overview of relevant parameters and definitions used in neck sonograms.
  3. Review the use of color Doppler and power Doppler in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules and metastatic lymph-nodes.
  4. Review the limited utility of Doppler interrogation in the evaluation of hyperthyroidism and Amiodarone thyrotoxicosis.

  1. Learn to identify and measure thyroid nodules.
  2. Recognize ultrasound characteristics of benign and malignant nodules that have predictive value in deciding treatment.

Use of Ultrasound in the Surveillance of Thyroid Cancer


  1. Highlight the importance of pre-operative ultrasound to determine extent of surgery.
  2. Understand the use of neck ultrasound in the follow up of patients with thyroid carcinoma.
  3. Learn to identify characteristics of benign and malignant lymph nodes

How to Perform Parathyroid Sonograms and when to conduct FNA


  1. Recognize the ultrasound appearance and features of parathyroid adenomas.
  2. To review the anatomical variations in the location of parathyroid glands.
  3. Discuss how to perform US guided parathyroid FNA biopsies.

  2. How to optimize images and adjust different setting for quality neck sonograms.
  3. Recognize normal anatomic architecture of the neck from suspected pathologic findings.

Ultrasound Guided FNA Biopsy


  1. Review the indications for UGFNA Biopsy.
  2. Understand the variety of techniques of performing the procedure.
  3. Recognize the importance of good slide preparation techniques for cytological analysis.

Thyroid Nodules and Cancers: On the spot decision making using (audience response system) ARS


  1. Recognize imaging features of diffuse thyroid disease, benign nodules and malignant thyroid nodules.
  2. Discuss real life case scenarios and management decision making.
  3. How to develop ‘on the spot’ FNA decision making skills.

Informed Consent, Report and Coding


  1. Understand the various codes used to bill for thyroid ultrasound and biopsy, as well as the appropriate use of modifiers.
  2. Recognize the elements needed for a comprehensive ultrasound report.
  3. Be able to design an appropriate informed consent document for thyroid biopsy

Case Study / Panel Discussion: Audience Participation


  1. To review real life patient histories, images and treatment planning
  2. Faculty discussion to highlight important management pathways in patients with thyroid nodules and cancers
  3. Audience participation in the discussion to enhance learning process

Laboratory II


  1. Learn how to prepare the transducer for biopsy (aseptic vs. sterile technique).
  2. To understand the spatial relationship of needle tip and it’s orientation to the azimuthal plane for optimal needle visualization.
  3. Supervised instructions will be provided for the practice of ‘free hand’ parallel and perpendicular biopsy techniques.
