OVERVIEW
This course is designed to review new knowledge and technology that is generally not available in most formal training programs for endocrinologists.

Whereas ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and parathyroid disorders encompasses new knowledge and technology that was not available in most formal training programs for endocrinologists, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has undertaken responsibility of training and certifying endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons, otolaryngologists / head and neck surgeons, pathologists and radiologists in these new procedures. Many candidates for ECNU certification need further instruction in performance of comprehensive ultrasound examination, preparation of written reports, biopsy technique and slide preparation.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This program is intended for clinical endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons, ENT / head and neck surgeons, pathologists and radiologists and their physician extenders. Those who may be currently performing neck ultrasound and/or FNA, but are not trained at the level of ECNU certification may also participate.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the indications and limitations of thyroid ultrasound and how it integrates with other thyroid tests to improve the diagnosis and management of thyroid disease.
  • Identify the indications for FNA biopsy.
  • Successfully perform thyroid ultrasound/FNA biopsy.
