Attention Florida, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Island AACE Members

First Coast Service Options (FCSO), the Medicare Administrative Contractor for FL, VI, and PR, has provided additional guidance on CPT® code 76942 (Ultrasound Guidance for needle placement). The entire article found here basically indicates FCSO will closely monitor the use of ultrasound guidance reported with procedure codes. Endocrinologists commonly report ultrasound guidance (76942) with fine needle aspirations (10022) of thyroid nodules. We strongly encourage members to check with their compliance departments and/or medical coders to ensure proper documentation is supported in the medical records when reporting CPT® codes 76942 and 10022. Supporting documentation may include but is not limited to the size or number of, location, density, etc. of a thyroid nodule(s).
