Continuing Medical Education (CME)
and Continuing Education Units (CEU) FAQ's
How do I get CME/CEUs for a program not on the AACE-CEC's approved resource list?
You can either fax or mail the agenda for the program along with all other CME/CEU's earned at the time of your renewal. It will be approved for the amount of endocrine coding related education time. For every hour of coding specific instruction you are entitled to receive 1.0 CME/CEU's.
What is the difference between a publication and a subscription?
A publication is a book that is received once a year. A subscription is a newsletter or magazine that is received several times throughout the year.
Do all subscriptions and publications require coding scenarios or summaries?
Yes. Publications require one coding scenario and a copy of the title page to receive the allotted number of CEUs. Subscriptions require one coding scenario or article summary per CEU, per article.
What are the maximum number of CME/CEUs I can earn from each area?
While there is no maximum number of hours required, CEC's must obtain the 6 required CME/CEU's annually.
Do excess earned CME/CEU's carry over from year to year?
No. CME/CEU's must be earned and submitted within your current renewal year.
What constitutes a "renewal year"?
The due date for postmark of the renewal is the last day of the month, of the subsequent year, that coincides with the month in which the credentialing test was given. For example, if you sat for and passed the CEC exam on March 3, 2007, you will need to have your renewal post marked by March 31, 2008.
What happens if I send in my CME/CEU's and renewal late?
There will be a $25.00 charge per month applied for late renewals, not to exceed 90 days. If the renewal exceeds 90 days, a new certification exam must be taken to reinstate your CEC credentials.
As a physician, can I obtain both CME and CEU credits for taking the CEC credentialing program?
Yes, you are qualified to obtain both. Renewal credits can be in the form of either CME or CEU credits.
