CEC Recertification Guidelines

To maintain accreditation as a Certified Endocrine Coder (CEC), the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) requires the completion of 6 hours of continuing medical units (CME's) or continuing education units (CEUs) per year. CEUs must be earned during the current renewal year. The following methods are accepted for renewal of CEC credentials.

Approved Resources

  • AACE-CEC Course 6.0 CME/CEU's (attendance CEU certificate)
  • AACE Practice Management Seminar 6.0 CME/CEU's
  • AACE Pediatric Practice Management Seminar 6.0 CME/CEU's

Additional Approved Resources

There are many courses, publications and subscriptions that are not on AACE's pre-approved list that offer continuing education in the coding/reimbursement field. Many of these courses may be accepted for CEUs if they pertain to endocrine specific coding or general coding pertinent to endocrinology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, pediatrics, or related discipline. Approval does not need to be granted before submitting them with your complete CEU packet at the time of your renewal. Submit all of the following information at the time of your renewal for determination of approval.

  • Seminar/Workshop: one hour of coding instruction equals one CEU
    • Name of seminar or workshop with copies of the agenda and course objectives
    • Name and credentials of speaker or sponsoring organization, as applicable
    • Number of hours spent in actual coding instruction. Do not include time for registration, meals or breaks
  • Audio Conferences: one hour of coding instruction equals one CEU

  • CPT®, ICD-9-CM, HCPCS:
    • Submit one coding scenario using information learned from reference material, one CEU per scenario
  • Subscriptions: one synopsis/scenario per article, per newsletter
    • Copy of newsletter issue

Note: Do not send renewal and CEUs separately. Place CEU documentation and renewal fee together when submitting

Concurrent Testing

The current CEC course and exam may be retaken and serve as the 6 CME/CEU credit hours required for annual recertification. The course and exam cost will not include the mandatory certification renewal fee of $75. There will be a $25.00 charge per month applied for late renewals, not to exceed 90 days. If the renewal exceeds 90 days, a new certification exam must be taken to reinstate your CEC credentials. Contact the Socioeconomic Practice Management Coordinator at the AACE office to set up your exam. All applicants must adhere to all exam pre-registration procedures to be eligible for applicable credits. Exams must be taken before the renewal date.
